The Friends of Harington was started in the same year, 1980, as the Harington Scheme. Initially they were a group of people actively involved; helping with teaching, working with the trainees on site, raising funds through a variety of social events and trying to help find eventual employment for the trainees. Their role has changed over the years, as Harington now has paid staff, but the Friends are still people who want to give voluntary support to Harington and who take an interest in the trainees and their future.
OUR AIMS are:
- To provide opportunities for social, leisure and welfare activities which cannot come from statutory funding.
- To build and maintain a link between the Scheme and the surrounding community.
- To support trainees on a regular basis with practical help; working alongside them on the site, and helping them to learn other routine and domestic survival skills through a variety of weekly activities.
Many Friends still find great satisfaction in helping in a practical way with the activities on the Harington Site. Others assist on particular occasions, either at the Open Days or with a fund raising event. There always seems to be a niche to fill if you want to become more involved with Harington.
